Hypnagogia: A New Lilith Folktale and Cirque Adventure

Step through the veil and into a whimsical circus adventure woven from mythology, dance, daring feats, and a brand-new score by David Rynhart and Cassidy Bacon, performed live.

Sylvia has just discovered that she is expecting a little girl, and she could not be more thrilled, except for one tiny detail…

A curse passed down through generations of women in her family will surely be inherited by her child.

Sylvia is haunted by demons that stir in the shadowy space between sleeping and waking, a realm known as the hypnagogic state.

Stories passed down by her mother and grandmother trace the curse to Lilith, the banished first wife of Adam in the Garden of Eden, a baby-eating she-demon who has haunted their family for generations.

Determined to save her child, Sylvia slips through the veil and into a fantastical dream realm, where she must face Lilith once and for all. But dreams rarely tell their secrets plainly, and Sylvia is about to discover that there is much, much more to this curse.

Written by Colorado playwright Cassidy Bacon, Hypnagogia features an all-new, album-length soundtrack created and performed live by David Rynhart and Cassidy Bacon. Drawing from multicultural folklore, legends of Lilith, and personal family history, this world-premiere production tells a deeply human story of inheritance, identity, and hope through the enchanting language of circus, dance, and live music.

This world-premiere work is part of the Neustadt JAAMM Festival (opens in a new tab).
